History: From Hiroshige's (1797-1858) "53 Stations of the Tokaido" travellers are shown here looking at the strange shape of the mountain from the veranda of a tea house. The story goes that the master-painter Kano Motonobu came here to paint the mountain but realized it was beyond his powers, and in his despair threw away his brush. Fudesute means, literally, "throwing away the brush." Hiroshige, however refused to be intimidated by it, and has masterfully depicted the strangely shaped rocks, the thick clouds around the base of the mountain, and the two ribbon-like waterfalls. The honjin (lodgings) of Sakanoshita was the most luxurious on the Tokaido; one of its gates is still standing today.
Our horizontal size wall hangings (wide) are usually made from tenugui that are printed horizontally so the panel is wider than it is long. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension.
