History: Sakura, or cherry blossoms, which bloom for only a week each spring, are synonymous in Japan with the brief duration of youthful beauty and the transitory nature of life itself. When the cherry trees blossom it is cause for celebration in the form of "hanami" or blossom viewing parties. The clouds of delicate pink tinted blossoms that cover the trees are truly short lived miracles worth a poem and a cup of sake in praise.In this design, sakura are combined with chrysanthemums, a symbol of autumn and longevity, as well as "kiri" or paulownia. According to Chinese legend, kiri is a tree favored by the phoenix. Considered to be a noble design, it has become, along with the chrysanthemum, a symbol of the emperor.
