History: The lady holds a fan between her lips as she reaches to tie her obi. She is wearing the traditional ageboshi, a popular headwear for the time that was named after the agehachou or swallowtail butterfly (to which it bears a resemblence). In the Edo era, both women of the samuri class, as well as commoners, wore it as street wear while sightseeing or picnicking, to keep the dust out of their hair. During the Meiji era, it evolved into the tsunokakushi headwear that is now worn at weddings. Her parasol is made of a framwork of bamboo covered with oiled paper. Our scroll size wall Hangings (long and narrow) are made from printed 100% cotton fabric panels, tenugui (printed cotton 'towels') or a noren (doorway curtain). They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side)--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
