Title: Ajisai Hydrangeas in the Rain
Size: 16 1/2 inches wide by 48 1/2 inches long including tabs. Ready to hang--natural bamboo rod included.
Description: Clear orange and lavender hydrengeas with white accents and gray green foliage. Small tan snail on one flower. Light lavender background. White and lavender swirled border.
History: The origin of the Japanese word ajisai was azu sa ai meaning 'gathering blue colors'. Ajisai flowers appeared in poems of the Nara period (710-794), but ajisai was not so popular until the Edo period (1603-1867), because the changeable flower color was thought to be immoral for the samurai culture. The samurai warrior class was trained to remain loyal to the shogun but because they associated the changing flower color of ajisai with a change of loyalty, they did not favor these flowers. Once they came back into popularity they began to symbolize love and gratitude because of their abundance of blossoms. It is said that a person can become lost in thought while looking at their beauty. Today, ajisai herald in the beginning of the rainy season and stand as a cheerful vision in contrast to the gloom of the season.
Our scroll size wall Hangings (long and narrow) are made from printed 100% cotton fabric panels, tenugui (printed cotton 'towels') or a noren (doorway curtain). They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side)--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
