History: The yakko was one of the lowliest servants of the daimyo or nobleman and one of his jobs was to clear the roads and force the populace to kneel when his master's entourage passed by. The size and shape of yakko dako (kites) depends on the area of Japan where it is made but they are distinguished by the wide sleeves that catch the wind and act as stablilizers instead of a tail. Some yakko dako are also called hibuse (fire prevention) and are believed to protect against fire which was an ever present danger in old Edo where an overturned lamp or uncontrolled cooking fire could easily raze an entire neighborhood of houses made of paper and wood. Symbolically, the kite cuts through the wind and reduces its power to fan the flames of destruction. Kite flying is still a traditional New Year past time and hibuse mini kites are sold at the Oji Inari Shrine on the first and second of January as amulets to assure a fire free year. This yakko dako is paired with another kite, a jidako (ji means character and dako means kite) on which the character for dragon (tatsu) is written.
Our scroll size wall Hangings (long and narrow) are made from printed 100% cotton fabric panels, tenugui (printed cotton 'towels') or a noren (doorway curtain). They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side)--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
