History: In Japan there is a saying "tsuru wa sen nen, kame wa man nen" (cranes live 1,000 years, tortoises live 10,000). In China, Mandarin cranes are said to live 1,000 years and thus became a symbol of long life as well as good fortune. This idea was introduced to Japan where legend says it took the crane over 1000 years to fly to the Sun. Because the crane keeps the same mate for its entire life, it has become a good luck symbol for successful marriage. In Japanese art, cranes are often paired with a tortoise (kame) or pine (matsu), other symbols of long life. This wall hanging would make an auspicious wedding or anniversary gift.
Our scroll size wall Hangings (long and narrow) are made from printed 100% cotton fabric panels, tenugui (printed cotton 'towels') or a noren (doorway curtain). They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side)--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
