History: This piece was made from an original design by Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984), designer, painter, and illustrator, who was designated a Japanese Living National Treasure in 1956. He was honored for being the pioneer of katazome, or hand-stencil dyeing, using cut out paper patterns and applying color to the stencils in a process that combined traditional Japanese dying techniques with Okinawan bingata. He was also a leader of the Japanese folk art movement or "mingei," and though many of his themes are not considered traditional there is still an element in them that is essentially Japanese. His works appear in many forms, kimono, decorative screens, wall hangings, fans, paintings, book covers, calendars and original prints, and have been exhibited worldwide.
Our small size wall hangings are made from handkerchiefs, scarves and small furoshiki. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side))--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
