History:Kabuki is a highly stylized form of theater. The three Japanese characters that make up its name mean, "dance, music and craft," and each element is displayed during a performance. Although founded early in the 17th century by Okuni, a shrine maiden who caused a sensation when she danced on the dry river beds of the ancient capital of Kyoto, Kabuki is perhaps best known for the fact that no women take part in the performances. All women's roles are played by men known as onnagata.
Kabuki's rich stories, plays and dances are largely based on earlier Noh as well as bunraku or puppet theater, but primary importance has always been placed on the actor rather than any other aspect of the art. Their costumes and make up are lavish in color and detail. Actors prepare their roles by studying the classic movements of their predecessors. The parts they play have become so formalized and symbolic that their smallest gestures are closer to dancing than acting and almost every move is accompanied by music. The actor here has been captured in mid step in a pose one would perhaps affect during a real performance.
Our small size wall hangings are made from handkerchiefs, scarves and small furoshiki. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side))--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
